GMO Crops, America's Farms and our Diet of Diseases

Which would a child enjoy more: a trip to a GMO factory farm or a visit to a farmer's market?

Growing up in New England, I have a profound respect for farmers and the individual protecting our right to know.  We must label GMO!   America (and her children) are told everything is fine with our food supply, and it's so strange - we've never been fatter or sicker.

p.s. After cancer at 38, I stopped eating America's "diet of diseases," and  our oldest child once said, "Mom this is just like the cigarette companies."

GMO Corn Seeds - Notice the hand that wears a glove to hold seeds -

Do you want to know which corn you are
feeding your family or your GMO corn feed cheeseburger

If you could tell the head of the farm bureau one thing, what would it be?

Let's spend an afternoon with your grandchildren at a factory farm and then a farmer's market and see which "farm" they enjoy more. . .

Really? "No Kid Hungry" Isn't it true that in America our poorest are not only malnourished but also the highest obesity rates?

Seriously,  "No Kid Hungry Campaign" are your partners* just hungry to get on our children's breakfast plates and make higher profits at the risk of our children's health?  According to a recent study,  there is a connection between poverty and obesity.

How sad but true,  many of America's poorest are not only malnourished but also experience our highest obesity rates and the host of health problems related to it including diabetes.   (And it's not because of laziness. . . check out the movie FedUp if you're interested in the discussion on lack of exercise as the reason.)

Note the "candy in a carton"
Water can not be offered as a beverage "choice"
Because there's "no nutritional value in water"
*Here's a partial list of No Kid Hungry Partners:
Domino sugar
Shake Shake
Denny's
Tyson
Kelloggs
Hickory Farms
Kraft Philadelphia
Jimmy Dean

According to Food Action and Research Action Center "supporters":  the relationship between obesity rates and the poor are declining.  Check out the partial list of their "supporters":
Coca-Cola Company
ConAgra Foods Foundation
Dr. Pepper Snapple Group
E S Foods/got breakfast? Foundation
General Mills Foundation
Kraft Foods Foundation
Kellogg Company

and both lists go on and on . . .

Anyone else feel like we're being duped?  America (and her children) have never been fatter or sicker and it's so strange. . . .we can't seem to figure out why.

What exactly is GMO? Thank you Whole Foods Market for the quick video

Thank you Whole Foods Market!  The first time I walked in to one of your markets was after I experienced breast cancer at 38 and had no idea about America's food supply. Have never looked back and thankfully that was over 13 "healthy" years ago.

GMO WHAT = Organisms whose genetic make up (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally.
GMO WHY = Crops are currently modified to survive herbicide treatment, produce their own pesticides and resist certain diseases.
GMO WHERE = In North America, over 70% of our packaged foods contain GMOs.
If you're shopping to avoid GMOs, follow these tips:

1. Go Organic!
2. Look for a seal of approval
3. Consider the additives
4. Eat most of your fruits and veggies
5. Choose dry grains, beans, nuts & seeds
6. Consider animal feed

Whole Foods Market supports your right to know what's in your food!  More on tips on avoiding GMOs and Whole Foods Market's commitment to full GMO transparency here:http://bit.ly/1hDyG1M

Everything you always wanted to know about GMO crops here: FAQs on GMOs

p.s.  Whole Foods Markets has committed to labeling all food products in our US and Canadian stores to indicate whether they contain Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) by 2018.  Many are already labeled and many more will be labels ahead of this deadline.

Meatless Monday: How about Cheese-free Date Pizza (chicken - optional - for those in the house who aren't meatless on Mondays)

Cheese-less Date Pizza

Wicked Local photo by Jared Charney
I've been asked for this recipe several times.  Apologies for not having posted sooner.  From start to finish this should take no more than 15 minutes to prepare and 15 minutes to bake.
  • One frozen (organic) pizza dough (thawed in bag on kitchen counter while at work)
  • Approx. 10 dates - sliced with pits removed
  • Cooked chicken (optional) - this is a great dish for that leftover chicken you are not sure what to do with - pulled off bone and diced
  • 1/8 teriyaki sauce - or less - depending on your taste
  • 1 medium sized onion - diced
  • 5 gloves of garlic - finely diced
  • 2 tablespoons of Olive Oil (Extra Virgin, First Cold Pressed)
Preheat oven to 450°
  • Place about a tablespoon of olive oil in sauté pan over low heat
  • Sauté onion, garlic and cooked chicken until diced onions are translucent and chicken is heated
  • Add teriyaki sauce to coat
  • Place about a tablespoon of olive oil in the bottom of the cookie sheet that has sides - to stop the oil from thinning and running off - pictured above
  • Pull dough out by hand and place in cookie sheet - flip to coat with olive oil - keep kneading out dough until it is thin and covers most of the cookie sheet
  • Place heated chicken, onion, garlic and teriyaki mixture on pizza dough
  • Open dates, rub with olive oil that maybe leftover in pan, place on top
  • Place cookie sheet on upper rack (not top) in preheated oven for approx. 15 minutes or until bottom of dough is brown and crispy.

Enjoy!

Dear America: My Breast Cancer Manifesto and Your Food Supply

Dear America,
Before breast cancer at 38, I had no idea about your highly processed, genetically engineered (GMO) crops, pesticide-laced, growth hormone & steroid injected, arsenic feed, antibiotic ingested, chemicals in a can, artificially flavored, sugar addicted, fat free, “naturally flavored”, artificially sweetened, fake-food-colored, factory-farmed, industry slanted studies, government subsidized, franken-food supply, and I thought I WAS eating healthy!*
When I was first diagnosed, it was suggested that I seek a second if not a third opinion on the course of my treatment and for that I am truly grateful, because it lead me on my journey into your "diet of diseases."

Yes, sadly, 1 in 8 women in the United States will experience breast cancer during her lifetime. Here's the other truth: the breast cancer rate for women in rural China is 11 out of 100,000. Yep! In mainland China they call breast cancer the rich women's disease. Crazy huh! (There is zero dairy in the traditional Chinese diet.)
Who really profits?
Ask our children what I think about the "pink washing" month of October. How much $$ from a "pink" bucket of fried chicken actually goes toward diet and breast cancer research or "awareness". Or, do the sales just generate more profits for the company selling the pink sneakers, hats, shoelaces, newspapers, wristbands, and pink plastic bags? Here's another truth: there are more carcinogens in a fried chicken leg than a pack of cigarettes - chickens are fed arsenic, etc. (As noted by a friend's PhD dissertation in molecular biology.)
My mom (twice) and sister had breast cancer and they tested negative for the BRCA gene so it's "not in the genes."
Most of us stumble on to the world of "organic" and "GMO free" not because we want to question another's belief system but because we (or a loved one) are sick, and we're seeking our truth.
I'm certainly not going to convince you, America, to change what's on our plates from this one post, but I do invite you to question the mantra of "moderation" and that it might actually be fed (pun intended) by the food and beverage industries. And, if it's the lack of exercise that us so fat and lazy - check out the movie FedUp. Can't afford "organic" or to eat "healthy"? Well, what's the price of our health if a dozen organic eggs is $4.99 compared to the emergency room co-pay of $50 because the "cheaper" factory farmed eggs were tainted with salmonella and we ended up in the hospital. (The half a billion egg recall from the summer of 2011 is now a criminal case.)
As you know, much of your food supply can not be exported; so, "feeding the world " mantra doesn't work either. In fact, you have a long list of foods that are "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS) that are banned in other countries but we're serving to our children on a daily basis because we believe that your food supply is safe, right?
I am truly grateful for the surgeons and caregivers but make no mistake. Breast cancer is BIG business - take a look at all the new hospital wings and treatment centers. Thankfully, the Chief of Oncology that oversaw my care supported my change to "real" food 100%. (And, when I shared my dietary change with a cardiologist, he reminded me, "the first thing I tell a patient after a heart attack . . . change your diet.")

I've been blogging and hosting a local cable TV show for a few years now because once you start to peel back the onion - there are millions and millions of us with our stories to share. Children with debilitating celiac disease and it's a lung doctor from Ireland who tells the family of Eastern Jewish descent, "Hey, this is huge in Ireland and I think your son is sick from what he's eating." Meanwhile, the pediatrician for the past four years kept saying. . . . Or, the eleven year-old baseball player that was considered "obese" and nearly diabetic and the only "food" he could eat at the "sports" snack shack wasn't even the bottled water because those are "enhanced" with chemicals. (His mom was told by the specialist to avoid "sports drinks" because they are basically dyed sugar water.)
Quite possibly, your citizens are sick and tired of being sick and tired, and we are hungry for "real" food and "real" change for ourselves and our children. I don't think you ever intentionally set out to make your citizen's sick, but I hope you can appreciate that we've never been fatter or sicker and strangely we can't seem to figure out why. Meanwhile, you keep telling us everything is fine with our food supply.
The most important breast cancer finding for me. . . . is on the end of my fork (and thankfully that was discovered over 13 years ago.)
An (organic) apple a day keeps the doctor away. - Ben Franklin

Best health always!

*Two studies from Yale Cancer Center find that breast cancer survivors who start regularly exercising and *eating healthier can decrease their risk for breast cancer recurrence and death, as well as improve overall quality of life.

"Pink Washing" Month is here!

Start your engines . . . "pink washing" month has begun and the "sea of pink" always makes me feel a bit queazy 'cuz who really profits?

Here's a challenge to all the "Pink Washers."  Since the National Cancer Institute and American Institute for Cancer Research shows that as much as 50% of cancer risk may be related to diet . . . let's encourage all the organizations that are funding "breast cancer research" to pledge 50% of their research dollars to breast cancer and nutrition research.  And, those academic institutions and organizations make a pledge that they will not allow their research to be influenced, guided, directed or in any respect tainted by the food and beverage industries.  (And, indirectly the pharmaceutical companies.)

Who really profits?

Check out the organization that coined the phrase: "Pink Washing" and hopes you'll Think Before You Pink!

p.s. I worked with a molecular biologist from China and she shared with me that her PhD dissertation showed that a fried chicken leg has more carcinogens than a pack of cigarettes.  She went totally vegan when she was experiencing "female problems" here in the States and her mother (back in China) told her to stop eating our food.

Remember those countries that consume the most dairy have the highest breast cancer rates.
