Our son said to me years ago, “Mom, this is like the cigarette companies and they’re not going to like it and make it easy.” Eight years later, he’s in his early twenties, and he and his football teammates are told to steer clear of America’s fast food, highly processed, white flour, sugar laden, fake, GMO, steroid fed, antibiotic laced, arsenic ingested, artificially flavored, food supply and eat more fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains, etc.
p.s. My husband first shared your mission with me and he added, it takes time to turn a big ship, but it’s turning.
Come on everybody – let’s demonstrate our support for Vani and all those speaking the truth about America’s food supply.

True story!
My husband is known to scrape his bread directly in the container and it annoys our daughter to no end. One night he turned the container around and asked, "Is this one of your organic non dairy things you eat?"
Yup.
I like it.
I know.
He asked, "how long have I been eating it?"
About seven years.
After cancer at age 38 I went dairy, GMO, processed food free and have been serving our family the same ever since. Earth Balance was one of the first products I discovered.

11 Things You Need to Know About GMO Labeling - Link to GMO Industry is Priceless
GMO in a Jar - Who really profits? |
Sadly, this is effort to educate people on genetic modification of crops is woefully lacking, not very accurate (starting with the definition and the government's role in safety testing) and raises issues that are irrelevant (differing labeling requirements by other countries). For accurate information on the issue, I strongly suggest visiting this site.http://www.fooddialogues.com/foodsource/gmo

Dear Bucknelldad,Disappointed with your link and thankfully not at all surprised that I don't see any New England Farmers on your list of affiliates, board participants, and industry partners. With all due respect, "woefully lacking" doesn't cut it. Remember what happened the last time a large government institution tried to mess with New England farmers? Please appreciate that after experiencing cancer at age 38 no food goes in the shopping cart unless it's Non GMO Project or organic. GMO crops are not feeding the world and America (and her children) are sick and tired of being sick and tired and told everything is fine with our food supply. And yes, our food supply must be labeled GMO when exported and much of it is even banned in other parts of the world.Best health always,SuperMom-in-training

Kitchen Sink Soup: What to do with leftover chicken, roasted carrots, and kale? Chicken soup with rice, of course
What to do with leftover baked chicken, 3 cups of kale and leftover roasted carrots. . . on a freezing Friday night after a football game. Chicken soup with rice, of course.
1 large diced onion
4 garlic gloves - minced in garlic press - or finely chopped
1 tablespoon of cold pressed extra virgin olive oil to sauté the garlic and diced onions
2 32 oz cartons of low sodium (organic) chicken broth
About 1 cup of chicken juice left over from baked chicken (frozen) - see pix below* This really is the secret ingredient so keep those juices after you've carved your meat to reuse later.
4 cups of filtered water
2 bay leaves
4 celery sticks - sliced down the center and diced
3 cups of kale (sliced in ribbons - kale was left over from salad three nights ago - there was no dressing on it - just the kale)
2 cups uncooked Long Grain Brown Rice
Chicken Carcass from leftover chicken** - if available
About 1 1/2 lbs of sliced and cubed cooked chicken - makes about 4 cups
2 cups of (leftover) roasted baby carrots - if using uncooked baby carrots add them the same time as uncooked rice
1 large pot
Sauté diced onions with minced garlic and olive oil until onions are translucent in large pot. Slice down the center of the celery sticks and dice. Add b2 cartons of chicken broth, water and frozen (leftover) chicken juice, add diced celery sticks. Add two bay leaves. (I also placed the chicken carcass in the broth while it was simmering.)
Once the broth comes to a gentle boil, add the uncooked long grain brown rice. (If you are using leftover rice that's already cooked add later at the same time as the cooked chicken.) Turn down to a simmer, cover and let rice cook for 50 minutes. (As most things that are delicious AND nutritious, the brown rice takes longer to cook so double check the cooking length on the package.)
This is a great time to dice the cooked chicken and roasted (leftover from dinner two nights ago) baby carrots. This smells incredible simmering on a cold New England night.
One the rice is cooked - be careful not to over cook the rice - add the cooked chicken and roasted baby carrots. Served with fresh loaf of Italian Bread. (If bread had been close to stale - would have turned in to croutons which is another family favorite.)
Truthfully - our daughter asked twice when the soup will be ready. Hope it tastes as good as it smells simmering away.

Why are ingredients labeled in grams instead of teaspoons? Hmmm. . ."drugs" are measured in grams
Dear Geaux,
Completely agree that "Common sense is not so common. - Voltaire
However, food labeling is meant to confuse the consumer not educate us. I had cancer at age 38 and thought I was eating "healthy" and had no idea about America's fake food supply. (I encourage you to see the movie FedUp.)
Our gym teacher displays a board with the product label and baggie of sugar that's in the soda, sports drink and carton of chocolate milk. Imagine how many schools would stop serving chocolate cow's milk when the mom's see the amount of sugar but here's the crazy part. Water isn't allowed on a school lunch menu as a choice because the Federal government sees no nutritional value in water. Now, I wonder what industry got three types of cow's milk on the lunch menu but not water?
Yes, "common sense is not so common" especially when we're being duped!
Soda = candy in a carton / chocolate cow's milk = candy in a carton / sports drinks = candy in a container

Food Babe: After You Read This You’ll Never Look At Milk The Same Way Again!
After You Read This You’ll Never Look At Milk The Same Way Again!(For entire post visit: www.foodbabe.com)
I find it disturbing that there are people who are working really hard to prevent the truth about the dairy industry from getting out. There are people who say there is no difference between conventional dairy and organic dairy. There are people who say that drinking milk does a body good, no matter what kind you buy. And there are people who say there’s no difference if the cow ate GMOs, grass or grain. I personally like to know the truth about what I am eating. That is why I spend so much time researching the facts about our food system and why I have dedicated my life sharing the information I uncover. I know many of you are buying dairy products (billions of gallons are sold every year), and feel it is crucial you know the main reasons why to only choose organic milk if you do choose to consume dairy. These guidelines apply to all dairy products, like butter, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, and whey protein. It is shoved into our minds since infancy that “Milk Does A Body Good” and that we need 3 big glasses a day for calcium and strong bones. But, is that really the case?

GMO Crops, America's Farms and our Diet of Diseases
Which would a child enjoy more: a trip to a GMO factory farm or a visit to a farmer's market?
Growing up in New England, I have a profound respect for farmers and the individual protecting our right to know. We must label GMO! America (and her children) are told everything is fine with our food supply, and it's so strange - we've never been fatter or sicker.
p.s. After cancer at 38, I stopped eating America's "diet of diseases," and our oldest child once said, "Mom this is just like the cigarette companies."

Really? "No Kid Hungry" Isn't it true that in America our poorest are not only malnourished but also the highest obesity rates?
Seriously, "No Kid Hungry Campaign" are your partners* just hungry to get on our children's breakfast plates and make higher profits at the risk of our children's health? According to a recent study, there is a connection between poverty and obesity.
How sad but true, many of America's poorest are not only malnourished but also experience our highest obesity rates and the host of health problems related to it including diabetes. (And it's not because of laziness. . . check out the movie FedUp if you're interested in the discussion on lack of exercise as the reason.)

What exactly is GMO? Thank you Whole Foods Market for the quick video
Thank you Whole Foods Market! The first time I walked in to one of your markets was after I experienced breast cancer at 38 and had no idea about America's food supply. Have never looked back and thankfully that was over 13 "healthy" years ago.
Whole Foods Market supports your right to know what's in your food! More on tips on avoiding GMOs and Whole Foods Market's commitment to full GMO transparency here:http://bit.ly/1hDyG1M
Everything you always wanted to know about GMO crops here: FAQs on GMOs
p.s. Whole Foods Markets has committed to labeling all food products in our US and Canadian stores to indicate whether they contain Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) by 2018. Many are already labeled and many more will be labels ahead of this deadline.
GMO WHAT = Organisms whose genetic make up (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally.
GMO WHY = Crops are currently modified to survive herbicide treatment, produce their own pesticides and resist certain diseases.
GMO WHERE = In North America, over 70% of our packaged foods contain GMOs.
If you're shopping to avoid GMOs, follow these tips:
1. Go Organic!
2. Look for a seal of approval
3. Consider the additives
4. Eat most of your fruits and veggies
5. Choose dry grains, beans, nuts & seeds
6. Consider animal feed

Meatless Monday: How about Cheese-free Date Pizza (chicken - optional - for those in the house who aren't meatless on Mondays)
Cheese-less Date Pizza
Wicked Local photo by Jared Charney |
- One frozen (organic) pizza dough (thawed in bag on kitchen counter while at work)
- Approx. 10 dates - sliced with pits removed
- Cooked chicken (optional) - this is a great dish for that leftover chicken you are not sure what to do with - pulled off bone and diced
- 1/8 teriyaki sauce - or less - depending on your taste
- 1 medium sized onion - diced
- 5 gloves of garlic - finely diced
- 2 tablespoons of Olive Oil (Extra Virgin, First Cold Pressed)
Preheat oven to 450°
- Place about a tablespoon of olive oil in sauté pan over low heat
- Sauté onion, garlic and cooked chicken until diced onions are translucent and chicken is heated
- Add teriyaki sauce to coat
- Place about a tablespoon of olive oil in the bottom of the cookie sheet that has sides - to stop the oil from thinning and running off - pictured above
- Pull dough out by hand and place in cookie sheet - flip to coat with olive oil - keep kneading out dough until it is thin and covers most of the cookie sheet
- Place heated chicken, onion, garlic and teriyaki mixture on pizza dough
- Open dates, rub with olive oil that maybe leftover in pan, place on top
- Place cookie sheet on upper rack (not top) in preheated oven for approx. 15 minutes or until bottom of dough is brown and crispy.
Enjoy!

Dear America: My Breast Cancer Manifesto and Your Food Supply
Dear America,
Before breast cancer at 38, I had no idea about your highly processed, genetically engineered (GMO) crops, pesticide-laced, growth hormone & steroid injected, arsenic feed, antibiotic ingested, chemicals in a can, artificially flavored, sugar addicted, fat free, “naturally flavored”, artificially sweetened, fake-food-colored, factory-farmed, industry slanted studies, government subsidized, franken-food supply, and I thought I WAS eating healthy!*
When I was first diagnosed, it was suggested that I seek a second if not a third opinion on the course of my treatment and for that I am truly grateful, because it lead me on my journey into your "diet of diseases."
Yes, sadly, 1 in 8 women in the United States will experience breast cancer during her lifetime. Here's the other truth: the breast cancer rate for women in rural China is 11 out of 100,000. Yep! In mainland China they call breast cancer the rich women's disease. Crazy huh! (There is zero dairy in the traditional Chinese diet.)

Who really profits? |
My mom (twice) and sister had breast cancer and they tested negative for the BRCA gene so it's "not in the genes."
Most of us stumble on to the world of "organic" and "GMO free" not because we want to question another's belief system but because we (or a loved one) are sick, and we're seeking our truth.
I'm certainly not going to convince you, America, to change what's on our plates from this one post, but I do invite you to question the mantra of "moderation" and that it might actually be fed (pun intended) by the food and beverage industries. And, if it's the lack of exercise that us so fat and lazy - check out the movie FedUp. Can't afford "organic" or to eat "healthy"? Well, what's the price of our health if a dozen organic eggs is $4.99 compared to the emergency room co-pay of $50 because the "cheaper" factory farmed eggs were tainted with salmonella and we ended up in the hospital. (The half a billion egg recall from the summer of 2011 is now a criminal case.)
As you know, much of your food supply can not be exported; so, "feeding the world " mantra doesn't work either. In fact, you have a long list of foods that are "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS) that are banned in other countries but we're serving to our children on a daily basis because we believe that your food supply is safe, right?
I am truly grateful for the surgeons and caregivers but make no mistake. Breast cancer is BIG business - take a look at all the new hospital wings and treatment centers. Thankfully, the Chief of Oncology that oversaw my care supported my change to "real" food 100%. (And, when I shared my dietary change with a cardiologist, he reminded me, "the first thing I tell a patient after a heart attack . . . change your diet.")
I've been blogging and hosting a local cable TV show for a few years now because once you start to peel back the onion - there are millions and millions of us with our stories to share. Children with debilitating celiac disease and it's a lung doctor from Ireland who tells the family of Eastern Jewish descent, "Hey, this is huge in Ireland and I think your son is sick from what he's eating." Meanwhile, the pediatrician for the past four years kept saying. . . . Or, the eleven year-old baseball player that was considered "obese" and nearly diabetic and the only "food" he could eat at the "sports" snack shack wasn't even the bottled water because those are "enhanced" with chemicals. (His mom was told by the specialist to avoid "sports drinks" because they are basically dyed sugar water.)

Quite possibly, your citizens are sick and tired of being sick and tired, and we are hungry for "real" food and "real" change for ourselves and our children. I don't think you ever intentionally set out to make your citizen's sick, but I hope you can appreciate that we've never been fatter or sicker and strangely we can't seem to figure out why. Meanwhile, you keep telling us everything is fine with our food supply.
The most important breast cancer finding for me. . . . is on the end of my fork (and thankfully that was discovered over 13 years ago.)

"Pink Washing" Month is here!
Start your engines . . . "pink washing" month has begun and the "sea of pink" always makes me feel a bit queazy 'cuz who really profits?
Here's a challenge to all the "Pink Washers." Since the National Cancer Institute and American Institute for Cancer Research shows that as much as 50% of cancer risk may be related to diet . . . let's encourage all the organizations that are funding "breast cancer research" to pledge 50% of their research dollars to breast cancer and nutrition research. And, those academic institutions and organizations make a pledge that they will not allow their research to be influenced, guided, directed or in any respect tainted by the food and beverage industries. (And, indirectly the pharmaceutical companies.)
Check out the organization that coined the phrase: "Pink Washing" and hopes you'll Think Before You Pink!
p.s. I worked with a molecular biologist from China and she shared with me that her PhD dissertation showed that a fried chicken leg has more carcinogens than a pack of cigarettes. She went totally vegan when she was experiencing "female problems" here in the States and her mother (back in China) told her to stop eating our food.
Remember those countries that consume the most dairy have the highest breast cancer rates.

And, those academic institutions and organizations make a pledge that they will not allow their research to be influenced, guided, directed or in any respect tainted by the food and beverage industries. (And, indirectly the pharmaceutical companies.)
Who really profits? |
Check out the organization that coined the phrase: "Pink Washing" and hopes you'll Think Before You Pink!
p.s. I worked with a molecular biologist from China and she shared with me that her PhD dissertation showed that a fried chicken leg has more carcinogens than a pack of cigarettes. She went totally vegan when she was experiencing "female problems" here in the States and her mother (back in China) told her to stop eating our food.
Remember those countries that consume the most dairy have the highest breast cancer rates.

Curious why over 500 school children have a rare and serious respiratory illness in Kansas City, MO alone
Curious why hundreds of children across the Midwest have come down with a rare and serious respiratory illness that the Center for Disease Control (CDC) calls enterovirius D68. There are over 500 children in Kansas City, Missouri alone.
Hmmm…. wonder how many of these children attend schools or live near "farms" that are "manufacturing" GMO crops? That is, crops like soy, alfalfa and corn that are "genetically engineered" with the weed killer/pesticide called Round Up Ready. That's what's supposed to happen, right? The pollen travels across the wind to . . .
Since cancer at 38, I read all labels, and because some manufactures won't label that they contain GMO ingredients - they don't go in my shopping cart. I look for those labeled: Non GMO Project Verified

General Mills moves to GMO labeling?
Terrific post by Robyn O'Brien, author of The Unhealthy Truth on The Great Granddaughter of General Mills' Co-Founder speaks out. Excerpt follows:
Today, at General Mills shareholder meeting, something remarkable happened. And if it doesn't speak to the changing food landscape in the U.S., I don't know what does.
Shareholders were set to vote on an initiative calling for the removal of genetically engineered ingredients from all General Mills' products. Even though General Mills announced that they would be removing genetically engineered ingredients from Cheerios earlier this year, the measure did not look likely to pass.
All eyes were on the vote, though, especially in the aftermath of the announcement that General Mills was acquiring Annie's Homegrown. So what happened? The great granddaughter of the co-founder of General Mills spoke up. [Read Robyn's complete post here: The Great Granddaughter of General Mills' Co-Founder speaks out]
Side Note from SuperMom101: Post Cereals was founded by a Medical Doctor who ran a sanitarium at the turn of the century where he believed that "healthy eating principles were crucial to one's health." Before then, he and his brother started a "whole grain" cereal company but when his brother wanted to add sugar they parted ways. Their last name. . . Kellogg.

Dr. Oz speaks the truth! The Fight Against "Enlist Duo"
Thank you Dr. Oz for speaking the truth!
Doe any one else find it strange that America (and her children) have never been fatter or sicker? Meanwhile, we're told everything is fine with our highly processed, genetically modified (GMO), chemically manufactured, pesticide sprayed, antibiotic feed, artificially flavored, steroid injected, high fructose corn syrup (HFSC),"all natural", fat free, nutritionally void, sugar dumped, food supply.
After cancer at 38, I steer clear as best we can of all this "fake" food supply 'cuz I don't want to be the one in twenty years that says, "see what this did to America's health and welfare." (And, 13 years ago, thought I was eating healthy.)

Organic Joos (Juice) wins support from Sam Adams Brewery plus Check out the Movie Fat Sick and Nearly Dead
Congratulations to the Juice company Joos! (Joos wins Support from Sam Adams Brewery). Changed my diet after cancer at 38 and discovered juicing. (I had no idea about America's highly processed, genetically modified, chemically engineered, artificially flavored, steroid injected, sugar-laden, artificially sweetened, fat free, factory-farmed food supply - and I thought I was eating healthy.)
Great move: www.fatsickandnearlydead.com (free to watch on the internet) that shows two amazing transformations to healthier living.
Good luck and best health always,

Response to a post at Fooducate: Is America Finally Starting to Eat Healthier
Map is a great visual! Would love to see obesity maps compared to each other for the past 20, 40, 50, and even 100 years.

Comment to Huffington Post post by Celebrity Nutrition & Fitness Expert - JJ Virgin: 10 Sneaky Sugar Sources That Hold Your Weight Hostage
Great movie: Fed Up explains the whole "America exercising like never before and strangely still can't seem to loss weight mystery."
Thanks JJ for your post that highlights one of the roots of it - S.U.G.A.R. (and artificial sweeteners are no better.)
By the way. . . anyone else find it strange that we're told everything is fine with America's highly processed, chemically engineered, genetically modified, artificially flavored, chemical laden, factory farmed, food supply and we can't seem to figure out why America (and her children) have never been fatter or sicker?
